Meg Stalter Is Doing a Bit. The Bit Is a Real Pop Album

The safest way to misread Meg Stalter's pop career is to laugh at it, which is exactly what she's counting on.
The *Hacks* star launched her music era in the most Stalter way imaginable — crashing her own lookalike contest in a Bushwick park, in a pink wig and lingerie, to debut "Prettiest Girl in America," an electro-pop track about the unbearable burden of being the most beautiful, most wealthy person alive. "Do you know how hard it is to go to a restaurant," she deadpans, "and to know that you can buy the whole restaurant?" It is a joke. It is very funny. And if you stop there, she's got you.
Because the second single is called "GAY," it features MUNA, it dropped on the first of June like a gauntlet, and its chorus — "protect the dolls, and the serve, and the they" — is a genuine Pride anthem wearing a comedy nose. The bit and the sincerity aren't in tension. They're the same gesture. Stalter figured out something most pop stars spend careers missing: that camp is not the opposite of meaning it. Camp is how you mean it *and* survive meaning it. "She put the ass in aesthetic, she knows that everything's camp" — that's a punchline and a thesis in one line, and the fact that it slaps at a circuit party is not incidental to its seriousness. It *is* its seriousness.
The album's called *Crave*. The stated mission — pop that "feels as good as it is a little unhinged," about "identity, desire, and self-perception through a distinctly offbeat lens." Every song co-written with Jesse Thomas, out this summer. Read that back without the comedian's name attached and it's just… a good pop record's mission statement. The joke was never that a funny woman can't make real music. The joke is on anyone who needs those to be different things.
We'll have the full verdict when *Crave* lands. For now: she's the prettiest girl in America, she's gay, she's cool, she's awesome. No fair.
